The person credited with this unit standard is able to understand the objectives and statutory requirements pertaining to health and safety in the workplace. The learners will be able to explain the rights, powers, functions and duties of the workplace health and safety representative and how any health, safety and environmental issues may be handled.

Learners will also be able to:

• Explain health and safety requirements pertaining to employers, employees, safety representatives and safety committees
• Conduct health and safety inspections to identify risks
• Participate in the safety, health and environmental structures and measure these activities according to health, safety and environmental requirements

The learner credited with this unit standard will be able to explain why the risk assessment process is the foundation of any health and safety programme and promotes a proactive approach to health and safety management

This programme introduces learners to health and safety legislation and why it is important to comply. The module looks at the general aspects around health and safety hazards that apply to most workplaces.

This programme provides learners with a basic understanding of the OHS Act and regulations as well as how to interpret health and safety legislation.

The person credited with this unit standard is able to identify and explain the legal and organisational specific requirements regulating the reporting and investigation of workplace incidents.

Learners will also be able to:

• Complete the required reports and be able to process any physical evidence which may have been collected
• Identify root causes and initiate corrective actions

This workshop emphasizes the need for top management to address the civil and criminal exposures on a daily basis and in doing so, protect the company, employees and all persons who may be affected by the company’s work activities.

The purpose of this Unit Standard is to enable learners to apply basic health and safety legislation in the form of standards and procedures governing health and safety in the workplace, to ensure that they contribute to a safe, healthy environment for themselves and others.

The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the circumstances under which compensation may be claimed and the nature and degree for which it may be awarded.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to understand the importance of implementing a negotiated health and safety agreement and the monitoring of compliance thereto. Learners will also be able to describe the content requirements of a health and safety agreement, consult with constituents regarding the content requirements and monitor the implementation of the action plan related to the health and safety agreement.

Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to explain the importance of integrating safety and health considerations in routine activities within the workplace and identify the critical areas in order to prevent incidents taking place. Learners will be able to measure safety performance against established objectives, deal with any deviations from the set objectives and make recommendations on the development of the safety and health management programme.

The person credited with this unit standard is able to explain the duties of both the employees and employers with regard to Occupational Safety and Heath in the workplace. Learners will be able to understand the requirements that apply to persons entering the workplace and performing any duties therein as well as the requirements for the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), housekeeping and emergency procedures that apply to the workplace.

The person credited with this program will be able to understand the legislation that applies to occupational health and safety; the impact that non-compliance would have in the workplace and understand the inspection protocols applicable to the workplace. Learners will also be able to carry out physical inspections and record, report and deal with the results of the inspection in order to implement corrective and preventative actions.

The person credited with this program will be able to understand the importance of compliance to safety, health and environmental legal and other requirements for a specific workplace and the importance of integrating safety, health and environmental considerations into all routine activities at the workplace.

In addition, learners will be able to identify any deviations and workplace safety performance in the workplace from health, safety and environmental requirements and be able to ensure that the correct action is taken in situations where safety health and environmental issues are not in accordance with requirements.
